Gauge Block Stack Builder
Which gauge blocks make up this length with the fewest blocks?
Select gauge blocks from a standard 88-piece metric or 81-piece inch set to build a length, by eliminating the right-hand digit first.

How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Gauge block set | choice | The set you own; check its inventory, because missing or worn blocks change the selection. |
| Length to build | mm or in | Required length, in millimetres for the metric set or inches for the inch set, to the set’s resolution (0.0005 mm or 0.0001 in). |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Gauge block set
- What it is
- The gauge block set you have: an 88-piece metric set or an 81-piece inch set. It decides which block sizes the tool may combine and the unit of the length.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 2 options from the list: 88-piece metric (1.0005; 1.001–1.009; 1.01–1.49; 0.5–9.5; 10–100 mm); 81-piece inch (0.1001–0.1009; 0.101–0.149; 0.050–0.950; 1–4 in).
- Example
- The form opens with “88-piece metric (1.0005; 1.001–1.009; 1.01–1.49; 0.5–9.5; 10–100 mm)” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- Check your set’s inventory; missing or worn blocks may need a different combination.
What this means: Length to build
- What it is
- The exact length you want the wrung stack of gauge blocks to make, in millimetres for the metric set or inches for the inch set.
- Units and format
- Enter a number in mm or in: millimetres or inches, as long as every length uses the same unit. The form accepts 0.000001 mm or in to 1000 mm or in. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 41.3275 mm or in as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- Match the unit to the set chosen above. The length must be a whole multiple of the set’s smallest step, or no stack can be found.
Method and formulas
- Work from the right-hand digit: choose the block that clears the smallest digit, subtract it, and repeat with the next series.
- Metric: 1.0005 for a half-micrometre, 1.001–1.009 for micrometres, 1.01–1.49 to reach a multiple of 0.5 mm, 0.5–9.5 to reach a multiple of 10 mm, then 10–100 mm blocks.
- Inch: 0.1001–0.1009, then 0.101–0.149, then 0.050–0.950, then 1–4 in blocks.
- Example: 41.3275 mm from the 88-piece set uses 1.0005 + 1.007 + 1.32 + 8 + 30 (5 blocks).
Limitations
- Each block is used once; the set is assumed complete.
- Length tolerances of the blocks and wringing films accumulate; use calibration values for high-accuracy work.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Build a sine bar stack or comparator setting
- Set height gauges and calibrate instruments
- Check whether a length can be built from your set
Who it is for
- Quality inspectors
- Toolmakers
- Metrology technicians
What you get
- Blocks to wring together
- Number of blocks
- Stack total
Interpreting the result
- Fewer blocks give less accumulated error; wring the largest blocks first and keep the stack at reference temperature.
