How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Angle value | The number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | The unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Angle value
- What it is
- The angle you want to convert, exactly as written on the drawing, specification or instrument.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 1 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- Write degrees, minutes and seconds as decimal degrees first, or convert each part separately.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the angle was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed angle unit.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 7 options from the list: degree; radian; gradian; arc-minute; arc-second; milliradian; revolution.
- Example
- The form opens with “radian” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- Calculators and software often work in radians; check which one the source used.
Method and formulas
- Value in degree = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
- Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
- Factors used (1 unit = … degree): radian 57.29577951308232; gradian 0.9; arc-minute 0.016666666666666666; arc-second 0.0002777777777777778; milliradian 0.05729577951308232; revolution 360.
- Example: 1 radian = 57.29578 degree.
Limitations
- Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
- Degrees–minutes–seconds can be read from the arc-minute and arc-second rows.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert angle values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
- Check supplier data given in other units
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- The angle in each listed unit
- Value in degree
Interpreting the result
- Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
