How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Length value | The number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | The unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Length value
- What it is
- The length you want to convert, exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 1 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- Copy the number with all its decimals; round only the converted result.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the length was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed length unit.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 10 options from the list: m; mm; µm; cm; km; in; thou (mil); ft; yd; mile.
- Example
- The form opens with “in” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- Check the prefix carefully: mm, µm and m differ by factors of 1000, and a thou (mil) is one thousandth of an inch.
Method and formulas
- Value in m = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
- Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
- Factors used (1 unit = … m): mm 0.001; µm 0.000001; cm 0.01; km 1000; in 0.0254; thou (mil) 0.0000254; ft 0.3048; yd 0.9144; mile 1609.344.
- Example: 1 in = 0.0254 m.
Limitations
- Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert length values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
- Check supplier data given in other units
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- The length in each listed unit
- Value in m
Interpreting the result
- Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
