How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Torque value | The number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | The unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Torque value
- What it is
- The torque or moment you want to convert, exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or tightening specification.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 50 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- Copy the number with all its decimals; round only the converted result.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the torque was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed torque unit.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 8 options from the list: N·m; N·mm; kN·m; kgf·m; kgf·cm; lbf·ft; lbf·in; ozf·in.
- Example
- The form opens with “lbf·ft” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- lbf·ft and lbf·in differ by a factor of 12, and N·m and N·mm by 1000; check which one the source uses.
Method and formulas
- Value in N·m = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
- Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
- Factors used (1 unit = … N·m): N·mm 0.001; kN·m 1000; kgf·m 9.80665; kgf·cm 0.0980665; lbf·ft 1.3558179483314; lbf·in 0.1129848290276; ozf·in 0.0070615518142.
- Example: 50 lbf·ft = 67.790897 N·m.
Limitations
- Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert torque values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
- Check supplier data given in other units
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- The torque in each listed unit
- Value in N·m
Interpreting the result
- Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
