How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Force value | The number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | The unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Force value
- What it is
- The force you want to convert, exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 1000 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- A mass in kg or lb is not a force; use kgf or lbf only when the source means a force.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the force was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed force unit.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 9 options from the list: N; kN; MN; kgf; tonne-force; lbf; kip (1000 lbf); ozf; dyne.
- Example
- The form opens with “lbf” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- Check prefixes such as k and M, and whether a “ton” means tonne-force or another ton.
Method and formulas
- Value in N = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
- Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
- Factors used (1 unit = … N): kN 1000; MN 1000000; kgf 9.80665; tonne-force 9806.65; lbf 4.4482216152605; kip (1000 lbf) 4448.2216152605; ozf 0.27801385095378; dyne 0.00001.
- Example: 1000 lbf = 4,448.2216 N.
Limitations
- Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert force values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
- Check supplier data given in other units
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- The force in each listed unit
- Value in N
Interpreting the result
- Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
