How this tool works

Inputs, units and where to find them

InputUnitTypical source
Power valueThe number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote.
Unit of the entered valuechoiceThe unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m.

What each input means

Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.

What this means: Power value
Illustration: Power valueA motor driving a shaft; Power value is the rate at which it does work, energy per second.PExample: 10Power value
What it is
The power you want to convert, exactly as written on the nameplate, data sheet or quote.
Units and format
Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
Example
The form opens with 10 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
Get it right
Mechanical horsepower (hp) and metric horsepower (PS) are different units; check which one the source uses.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
Illustration: Unit of the entered valueThe options for Unit of the entered value, with the one currently selected highlighted.WkWMWhp (mechanical)+5 moreExample: hp (mechanical)Unit of the entered value
What it is
The unit the power was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed power unit.
Units and format
Choose one of 9 options from the list: W; kW; MW; hp (mechanical); metric horsepower (PS); ft·lbf/s; BTU/h (IT); kcal/h (IT); ton of refrigeration.
Example
The form opens with “hp (mechanical)” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
Get it right
BTU/h and tons of refrigeration describe heat flow rates; choose them only when the source does.

Method and formulas

  1. Value in W = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
  2. Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
  3. Factors used (1 unit = … W): kW 1000; MW 1000000; hp (mechanical) 745.69987158227; metric horsepower (PS) 735.49875; ft·lbf/s 1.3558179483314; BTU/h (IT) 0.29307107017222; kcal/h (IT) 1.163; ton of refrigeration 3516.8528420667.
  4. Example: 10 hp (mechanical) = 7,456.9987 W.

Limitations

  • Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
  • Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.

Typical uses

  • Convert power values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
  • Check supplier data given in other units

Who it is for

  • Engineers
  • Technicians
  • Buyers and estimators

What you get

  • The power in each listed unit
  • Value in W

Interpreting the result

  • Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
