How this tool works

Inputs, units and where to find them

InputUnitTypical source
Energy valueThe number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote.
Unit of the entered valuechoiceThe unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m.

What each input means

Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.

What this means: Energy value
Illustration: Energy valueA store filling up with energy; Energy value is the total amount of work or heat involved.EExample: 1Energy value
What it is
The energy or work you want to convert, exactly as written on the bill, data sheet or quote.
Units and format
Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
Example
The form opens with 1 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
Get it right
Energy is not power: kWh is an amount of energy, kW is a rate. Use the power converter for rates.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
Illustration: Unit of the entered valueThe options for Unit of the entered value, with the one currently selected highlighted.JkJMJWh+6 moreExample: kWhUnit of the entered value
What it is
The unit the energy was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed energy unit.
Units and format
Choose one of 10 options from the list: J; kJ; MJ; Wh; kWh; cal (IT); kcal (IT); BTU (IT); ft·lbf; therm (EC).
Example
The form opens with “kWh” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
Get it right
Check whether a calorie value is in cal or kcal; food labels often write kcal as “Calories”.

Method and formulas

  1. Value in J = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
  2. Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
  3. Factors used (1 unit = … J): kJ 1000; MJ 1000000; Wh 3600; kWh 3600000; cal (IT) 4.1868; kcal (IT) 4186.8; BTU (IT) 1055.05585262; ft·lbf 1.3558179483314; therm (EC) 105506000.
  4. Example: 1 kWh = 3,600,000 J.

Limitations

  • Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
  • Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.

Typical uses

  • Convert energy values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
  • Check supplier data given in other units

Who it is for

  • Engineers
  • Technicians
  • Buyers and estimators

What you get

  • The energy in each listed unit
  • Value in J

Interpreting the result

  • Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
