How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Volumetric flow rate value | The number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | The unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Volumetric flow rate value
- What it is
- The volume flow rate you want to convert, exactly as written on the pump curve, data sheet or quote.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 100 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- US and UK gallons are different sizes; check which one the source uses.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the flow rate was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed flow unit.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 9 options from the list: m³/s; m³/h; m³/min; L/s; L/min; US gal/min; UK gal/min; ft³/min (cfm); ft³/s.
- Example
- The form opens with “L/min” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- Check the time base as well as the volume: per second, per minute and per hour differ by factors of 60.
Method and formulas
- Value in m³/s = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
- Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
- Factors used (1 unit = … m³/s): m³/h 0.0002777777777777778; m³/min 0.016666666666666666; L/s 0.001; L/min 0.000016666666666666667; US gal/min 0.0000630901964; UK gal/min 0.00007576816666666667; ft³/min (cfm) 0.0004719474432; ft³/s 0.028316846592.
- Example: 100 L/min = 0.00166667 m³/s.
Limitations
- Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
- For compressed air and gases, flow depends on the reference pressure and temperature (free air, normal or standard); keep the same reference on both sides.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert volumetric flow rate values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
- Check supplier data given in other units
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- The volumetric flow rate in each listed unit
- Value in m³/s
Interpreting the result
- Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
