How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Mass value | The number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | The unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Mass value
- What it is
- The mass you want to convert, exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet, label or quote.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 100 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- Copy the number with all its decimals; round only the converted result.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the mass was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed mass unit.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 8 options from the list: kg; g; tonne; lb; oz (avoirdupois); short ton (2000 lb); long ton (2240 lb); slug.
- Example
- The form opens with “lb” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- A “ton” may be a tonne, a short ton or a long ton; check which one the source means.
Method and formulas
- Value in kg = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
- Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
- Factors used (1 unit = … kg): g 0.001; tonne 1000; lb 0.45359237; oz (avoirdupois) 0.028349523125; short ton (2000 lb) 907.18474; long ton (2240 lb) 1016.0469088; slug 14.593902937206.
- Example: 100 lb = 45.359237 kg.
Limitations
- Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert mass values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
- Check supplier data given in other units
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- The mass in each listed unit
- Value in kg
Interpreting the result
- Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
