How this tool works

Inputs, units and where to find them

InputUnitTypical source
Value typechoiceA reading such as 150 °C, or a change such as a 50 °C rise; differences convert without the offset.
ValueThe number as written.
Unit of the entered valuechoiceThe scale of the entered value.

What each input means

Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.

What this means: Value type
Illustration: Value typeThe options for Value type, with the one currently selected highlighted.A temperature (a reading)A temperature difference (a change)Example: A temperature (a reading)Value type
What it is
Whether the number is a temperature reading (a point on the scale) or a temperature difference (a change or rise). Readings convert with the scale offsets; differences do not.
Units and format
Choose one of 2 options from the list: A temperature (a reading); A temperature difference (a change).
Example
The form opens with “A temperature (a reading)” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
Get it right
A rise of 10 °C is 18 °F, but a reading of 10 °C is 50 °F; choose difference for rises and changes.
What this means: Value
Illustration: ValueA thermometer whose level rises with Value; the level follows the value you type.TExample: 100Value
What it is
The temperature reading or temperature change you want to convert, as written.
Units and format
Enter a plain number with no unit. The form accepts -1000000 to 1000000. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
Example
The form opens with 100 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
Get it right
A reading below absolute zero is rejected; check the sign and the scale.

What it is
The temperature scale the value is in: Celsius, Fahrenheit, kelvin or Rankine.
Units and format
Choose one of 4 options from the list: °C; °F; K; °R.
Example
The form opens with “°C” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
Get it right
Kelvin and Rankine are absolute scales that start at absolute zero.

Method and formulas

  1. Readings: K = °C + 273.15; °F = °C × 9/5 + 32; °R = K × 9/5.
  2. Differences: 1 °C = 1 K = 1.8 °F = 1.8 °R (no offset).
  3. Example: 100 °C is 212 °F and 373.15 K.

Limitations

  • Readings below absolute zero are rejected.
  • Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.

Typical uses

  • Convert heat-treatment and process temperatures
  • Convert a temperature rise for thermal expansion calculations

Who it is for

  • Engineers
  • Technicians
  • Buyers and estimators

What you get

  • Value in °C, °F, K and °R

Interpreting the result

  • Use the difference mode for expansion and heating calculations.
