How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Speed value | The number exactly as written on the drawing, data sheet or quote. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | The unit printed beside the value; check prefixes such as k, M and m. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Speed value
- What it is
- The speed or feed rate you want to convert, exactly as written on the data sheet, program or quote.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. Negative values are accepted. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 400 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- This converts linear speeds only; a spindle speed in rpm needs a diameter to become a surface speed.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the speed was given in. The tool converts from this unit to every other listed speed unit.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 9 options from the list: m/s; m/min; mm/min; km/h; ft/s; ft/min (sfm); in/min (ipm); mile/h; knot.
- Example
- The form opens with “ft/min (sfm)” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- Check the time base: per second and per minute differ by a factor of 60. Surface feet per minute (sfm) is ft/min.
Method and formulas
- Value in m/s = entered value × factor of the entered unit.
- Value in each other unit = SI value ÷ that unit’s factor.
- Factors used (1 unit = … m/s): m/min 0.016666666666666666; mm/min 0.000016666666666666667; km/h 0.2777777777777778; ft/s 0.3048; ft/min (sfm) 0.00508; in/min (ipm) 0.00042333333333333334; mile/h 0.44704; knot 0.5144444444444445.
- Example: 400 ft/min (sfm) = 2.032 m/s.
Limitations
- Displayed values are rounded to eight decimal places; small values use significant figures.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert speed values on drawings, data sheets and quotes
- Check supplier data given in other units
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- The speed in each listed unit
- Value in m/s
Interpreting the result
- Use the unit your specification is written in, and keep the original value on record.
