Density and Specific Gravity Converter
What is this density in other units, or as a specific gravity?
Convert density between kg/m³, g/cm³, kg/L, lb/in³, lb/ft³, lb/US gal and specific gravity (relative to water at 4 °C).

How this tool works
Inputs, units and where to find them
| Input | Unit | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Density value | The density or specific gravity as written on the data sheet. | |
| Unit of the entered value | choice | Its unit. |
What each input means
Open an input to see what it is, its units, the worked example and the common mistakes, with a small diagram.
What this means: Density value
- What it is
- The density or specific gravity you want to convert, exactly as given on the data sheet or in the reference, in the unit chosen below.
- Units and format
- Enter a plain number with no unit. The form accepts 0 to 10000000. Required: the tool does not calculate until every input is valid.
- Example
- The form opens with 7.85 as a worked example. It is an illustration, not a recommended value: replace it with your own figure.
- Get it right
- Specific gravity has no unit; choose the specific gravity option for it rather than g/cm³.
What this means: Unit of the entered value
- What it is
- The unit the density value is written in: metric (kg/m³, g/cm³, kg/L), imperial (lb/in³, lb/ft³, lb per US gallon) or specific gravity compared with water.
- Units and format
- Choose one of 7 options from the list: kg/m³; g/cm³; kg/L; lb/in³; lb/ft³; lb/US gal; specific gravity.
- Example
- The form opens with “g/cm³” selected as a worked example. Choose the option that matches your case.
- Get it right
- Gallon here means the US gallon; an imperial gallon value needs converting separately.
Method and formulas
- Factors to kg/m³: g/cm³ and kg/L × 1000; lb/in³ × 27 679.9047; lb/ft³ × 16.0184634; lb/US gal × 119.826427; specific gravity × 999.972 (water at 4 °C).
- Example: 7.85 g/cm³ = 7,850 kg/m³ = 0.283599 lb/in³.
Limitations
- Specific gravity is referenced to water at 4 °C; some data use 15.6 °C (60 °F) water, which differs slightly.
- Example values are illustrations. Replace them with values for your actual task.
Typical uses
- Convert material data between unit systems
- Turn specific gravity into density for mass calculations
Who it is for
- Engineers
- Technicians
- Buyers and estimators
What you get
- Density in each unit
- Specific gravity
Interpreting the result
- Use the density at the working temperature for liquids.

In Flow Measurement by the Numbers
What it covers: Volume, mass and standard volume flow and how to convert between them, mean velocity and Reynolds number, why temperature changes a litre, and a hot water recipe that came out 2.6% short.
